Peshmerga forces enter Syrian town

As reported in 'The Japan News' : The Associated Press, SURUC, Turkey (AP) — A vanguard force of Iraqi peshmerga troops entered the embattled Syrian border town of Kobani from Turkey on Thursday, part of a larger group of 150 fighters that the Kurds hope will turn back an offensive by militants of the Islamic State group. The deployment, accompanied by 50 members of the Free Syrian Army, was condemned by Syria’s government as an act of Turkish aggression and a “blatant violation of Syrian sovereignty.” The first group of Kurdish fighters crossed into Syria following heavy overnight clashes as Islamic State extremists unsuccessfully tried to capture the frontier post, the only gateway in and out of the town. Kobani is under attack by the militants from three sides despite weeks of airstrikes by a U.S.-led coalition. Mustafa Bali, an activist based in the town, said the remaining troops will follow later in installments as a security precaution because the IS fighters were targeting the border area. “The first 10 are now with the People’s Protection Units, and they include doctors and fighters, and the rest are expected to enter in the coming hours at night,” Bali told The Associated Press. The People’s Protection Units, also known as the YPG, are the main force in predominantly Kurdish regions of northern Syria. Other peshmerga forces were assembled in a facility on the outskirts of the Turkish border town of Suruc, about 12 kilometers from the Syrian frontier.Speech

AP asks for explanation of fake FBI news stories

As reported in 'The Japan News' : The Associated Press, SEATTLE (AP) — Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy and The Associated Press sent separate letters to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday expressing concerns that the FBI faked an AP story to catch a bomb threat suspect in 2007. The AP also asked the Justice Department to account for other times it has posed as a media organization in an investigation. “When law enforcement appropriates the identity of legitimate media institutions, it not only raises questions of copyright and trademark infringement but also potentially undermines the integrity and credibility of an independent press,” wrote Leahy, a Vermont Democrat. Documents obtained by the San Francisco-based Electronic Frontier Foundation and publicized this week by Christopher Soghoian, the principal technologist for the American Civil Liberties Union, revealed that the FBI’s Seattle office forged an AP story to help catch a 15-year-old suspect who had been making bomb threats at a high school. The FBI obtained a warrant from a federal magistrate judge to send a “communication” to a social media account associated with the bomb threats. The “communication,” which contained a software tool that could verify Internet addresses, turned out to be a link to a phony AP story about the bomb threats posted on a web page created by the FBI. The suspect clicked on the link, revealing his computer’s location and Internet address, and helping agents confirm his identity. In a written statement, Frank Montoya Jr., the FBI’s special agent in charge in Seattle, said the technique is used “in very rare circumstances.” “Every effort we made in this investigation had the goal of preventing a tragic event like what happened at Marysville and Seattle Pacific University,” he said, referring to two local school shootings this year. The AP said in its letter that it is never appropriate for the government to pose as an independent news organization. It requested an accounting of how often the DOJ has done so; sought Holder’s word that the DOJ would never again misrepresent itself as the AP; and asked for policies and guidelines to ensure the DOJ does not further impersonate news organizations. “The FBI both misappropriated the trusted name of The Associated Press and created a situation where our credibility could have been undermined on a large scale,” AP General Counsel Karen Kaiser wrote. “The FBI may have intended this false story as a trap for only one person. However, the individual could easily have reposted this story to social networks, distributing to thousands of people, under our name, what was essentially a piece of government disinformation.” The Justice Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the letters.

Viral video documents N.Y. street harassment

As reported in 'The Japan News' : The Associated Press Actress Shoshana Roberts is seen during an interview at Associated Press headquarters in New York on Wednesday.
The Associated Press, NEW YORK (AP) — A video recording the comments a woman hears as she walks around the nation’s biggest city is a testament to the pervasiveness of street harassment women face, its creators said. The comments come continuously as the woman walks through the streets of Manhattan — “What’s up, Beautiful?” and “Smile!” — and there’s even a stretch when a man just silently walks right next to her for several minutes. The video, shot over 10 hours one day in neighborhoods all over the borough and edited down to a 2-minute final product, has set off a storm of outrage on its way to more than 10 million views since it was released online Tuesday. The video follows other similar ones that show women experiencing non-stop harassment in the streets of Cairo and Brussels. “This is having a very serious impact on the way we live our lives,” Emily May, executive director of Hollaback!, the anti-street harassment organization that put out the video, said Wednesday. The footage, which was shot and edited by Rob Bliss, was captured by a camera Bliss had in his backpack as he walked several feet of front of actress Shoshana Roberts, who was dressed in jeans and a T-shirt and walked silently along. At no point did Roberts make eye contact with any of the men she passed or talk to any of them. That didn’t stop the comments from coming. When she didn’t respond, one man told her, “Somebody’s acknowledging you for being beautiful. You should say thank you more!” Roberts said the number of comments the day the video was shot was nothing out of the ordinary for her. “The frequency is something alarming,” she said. Martha Sauder, walking on a Manhattan street on Wednesday, agreed that street harassment is a problem and said it happens to her frequently. “It’s inappropriate. It’s like an invasion of your space,” she said. “I’d like it to stop.” But the video also has faced some online criticisms, among them that the men shown all seem to be minorities.Speech
