DESIGNERS FIND INSPIRATION IN SHAKESPEARE

As reported in 'The St. Petersburg Times' : DESIGNERS FIND INSPIRATION IN SHAKESPEARE By Galina Stolyarova The St. Petersburg Times Published: June 25, 2014 (Issue # 1817)
How does a collection of fashionable garments inspired by Shakespeare’s verse shown by a romantic pond in a suburban park housing one of the former imperial residences sound? This is exactly the experience that awaits fashion-conscious and curious locals at Catherine Park in Tsarskoye Selo on Saturday, June 28 as five premier St. Petersburg fashion designers indulge in a sophisticated game called “Anglomania.” The fashion show has become part of the annual Associations project, run by the Tsarskoye Selo museum, and is being held for the sixth time this year. Every year, the show celebrates an epoch or style in art — as seen through fashion — and is put together by the finest fashion talent from Russia’s cultural capital. The theme is proposed to interested designers by the management of Tsarskoye Selo, the host of the beautiful event that was first held in 2009. The designers create haute couture collections specifically for the project and show their work at various venues in Catherine’s Park, taking inspiration in the vast collections and archives of the Tsarskoye Selo museum estate. Previous events have been dedicated to baroque, art nouveau, military style and antiquity. The 2013 event was devoted to the different styles of diplomatic presents awarded to the members of royal and aristocratic families in different countries. The five participating designers this year include the creme of the crop of the St. Petersburg fashion scene. Tatyana Parfionona, Lilia Kisselenko, Yelena Badmayeva, Ianis Chamalidy and Stas Lopatkin have created capsule collections specifically for the exciting event. This year the designers sought inspiration in the vast cultural legacy of Great Britain — and more specifically in Shakespeare’s poetry. Each show is inspired by a particular work of Shakespeare, including, the example, “The Merry Wives of Windsor” and “The Tempest.” The British angle was suggested to the designers as a reverence to the UK-Russia Year of Culture that is taking place this year. The British connection is by no means small in Tsarskoye Selo as it is linked to Great Britain in many different ways, from Charles James Fox, a prominent British Whig statesman of the 1700s whose bust is set up at the Cameron Gallery, to Charles Sydney Gibbes, the English tutor for the children of Nicholas II, who stayed loyal to the tsar’s family till the end, said Irina Nacharova, the spokeswoman of the museum estate. “During the reign of Catherine II, the residence received many pieces of the famous Wedgwood pottery and a collection of English engravings from the 1750s-90s. One of the most romantic parts of the Tsarskoye Selo palace-and-park complex is the English landscape garden.” The brain behind the project is Olga Taratynova, the director of the Tsarskoye Selo museum estate. “This collaboration between the art historians and the fashion designers is an attempt to bridge the history and the modernity,” she said. “It is also an exciting form of reaching out to the new audiences. Indeed, a theatrical show is different from a standard museum tour as it gives you different emotions and different experiences. During the shows of the Associations project, the spectators immerse themselves in the atmosphere of a suburban imperial residence and look at the historical and artistic legacy in a fresh and different way, through the eyes of the fashion designers. It is at this precious moment when the tradition and classics embrace contemporary art and modern attitudes, and this is when a new art form, a new creative space and a new artistic interpretation is being born.” While in the previous years the locations for the fashion shows have varied, and are typically shown simultaneously at different venues throughout Catherine Park, this time round, the whole event will be held at the same venue, at the Mirror Ponds. The visual spectacular that will run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. will be directed by Vasily Barkhatov, the aspiring theatrical director, who has staged productions for some of Russia’s finest theaters, including Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater and St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theater. Tickets cost 300 rubles ($8.72), and can be purchased on arrival from the ticket booths at Catherine Park on Saturday, June 28.

REBELS AGREE TO ABIDE BY CEASE-FIRE IN UKRAINE

As published in 'St Petersburg Times': REBELS AGREE TO ABIDE BY CEASE-FIRE IN UKRAINE By Marko Drobnjakovic and Vladimir Isachenkov The Associated Press Published: June 25, 2014 (Issue # 1817) DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) — Pro-Russian insurgents in eastern Ukraine agreed Monday to respect a cease-fire declared by the Ukrainian president, raising hopes for an end to months of fighting that have killed hundreds and ravaged the country’s industrial heartland. The announcement came as the Russian and U.S. presidents traded demands over the conflict. Russian President Vladimir Putin urged direct talks between the government and the rebels. President Barack Obama warned Putin that Moscow will face additional costs if it does not help ease the crisis. The insurgents’ pledge to respect the cease-fire came on the first day of talks between a former Ukrainian president, the Russian ambassador, European officials and the eastern separatists who have declared independence. While the government side was nominally not represented, ex-President Leonid Kuchma attended the discussions at the request of the sitting president. The negotiations were launched in line with President Petro Poroshenko’s peace plan, which started June 20 with a weeklong unilateral cease-fire in the fighting that has killed more than 350 people and forced tens of thousands to flee their homes. Alexander Borodai, one of the rebel leaders who took part in Monday’s talks in Donetsk, said rebels would respect Poroshenko’s cease-fire, which lasts through 0700 GMT (11 a.m. Moscow Time) Friday. The insurgents had previously demanded the Ukrainian military withdraw its troops from the east as a condition for any talks, so Borodai’s statement represented a softened stance that raised expectations that the cease-fire could hold. Even before the insurgents made their pledge, the government said that there had been no fighting in the east since Monday morning. Since the cease-fire was declared June 20, the Ukrainian government has accused the rebels of firing at government positions, while insurgents blamed Ukrainian forces for failing to honor the promise to halt hostilities. Poroshenko has said government troops will fire back if attacked. The rebels, who have declared regions on border with Russia independent and fought government troops for two months, also promised to release observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe who have been held hostage. “This will be one of the steps that will improve the mutual understanding of both sides,” said Alexei Karyakin, a representative of the insurgents in the Luhansk region. In Moscow, the Kremlin said Putin underlined in his conversation with Obama that to normalize the situation in eastern Ukraine, it’s necessary to “effectively end fighting and start direct talks between the conflicting parties.” Poroshenko’s office said Monday that he has offered Russia a chance to send its own observers to join the OSCE mission in Ukraine to see that government troops were observing the cease-fire. Monday’s talks involved Ukraine’s ex-President Leonid Kuchma, the Russian ambassador to Ukraine and an envoy from the OSCE. Poroshenko has ruled out talks with those he calls “terrorists,” so inviting Kuchma to mediate offered a way to conduct talks without the government’s formal engagement. Kuchma, who served as president from 1994 to 2005, comes from the east and is an astute political player respected by both sides. His ex-chief of staff, Viktor Medvedchuk, who has lived in Russia and reportedly has close ties to Putin, was also at the talks. If both sides observe the cease-fire, “then a normal peace process could start,” Kuchma told reporters after Monday’s talks. Putin publicly expressed support Sunday for Ukraine’s declaration of a cease-fire and urged both sides to negotiate a compromise, which, he said, must guarantee the rights of eastern Ukraine’s Russian-speaking residents. Putin clearly intends to maintain pressure on the Ukrainian government in Kiev to give the country’s eastern industrial regions more powers, which would allow them to keep close ties with Russia and serve the Kremlin’s main goal of preventing Ukraine from joining NATO.

Remembering Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha : 20 Jun 14

Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha, a revolutionary figure, a poet, a writer and a great classical icon of Assam. He was born on 31st January 1909 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He was a multifaceted artist and revolutionary singer of Assam. He is popularly known as Kalaguru means Guru of Arts. From an early stage, he played an active role in Indian independence. He came to be influenced by left wing ideas and came close to the Communist Party of India. However, when Germany attacked Soviet Union during Second World War and the Indian communists decided to work with the British government, a section of the party favoured a different approach to oppose British imperialism and Fascism simultaneously. So a split happened in the communist party and in 1945 he finally joined the Revolutionary Communist Party of India. In 1951, after the death of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala he became the president of the Assam branch of Indian People's Theatre Association. Apart from being a revolutionary he was also a brilliant academician and researcher. Due to participation in freedom struggle he was forced by the British Govt to leave Rippon College at Calcutta and transferred to Victoria College at Coch Behar. He was not able to continue his formal studies even there due to frequent raid of British forces in his hostel and was compelled to give up his formal educational career for ever. After independence he was probably the only person who said “yeh azadi jhoothi hein”, and started working for the people. This was the time when he was one of the revolutionaries and he was an enemy for the state Bishnu Prasad was an established singer. The level of influence exerted by the Kola Guru can be observed through the fact that most cultural music competitions of Assam feature a segment called Bishnu Rabha Sangeet related to his compositions, lyrics and verse. He had learnt Borgeet of Shrimanta Shankar Deva and gave the genre a new significance for the modern times. There are more than hundred songs composed by him. His songs are collectively called as Bishnu Rabha Sangeet. This was a new genre of Assamese. In his songs one can see diverse themes like tributes to the Mother Nature, the exploitation of the peasant masses by the colonial rulers, the revolts of the workers at tea industries etc. His songs also reflect his revolutionary ideal and the country’s struggle for real freedom. Some of his songs are popular among children even today and will be, for all times to come. Some leading numbers include Xurore Deulore, Bilote Halise, etc. Kalaguru died in 20th June 1969 in Tezpur, Assam. His death anniversary is observed as Rabha Divas in Assam. He is little known in the national arena. His contribution towards culture and freedom movement is always appreciable. Today on his death anniversary let us pay tribute to this great person who used both brush and gun. He was always for the freedom and rights of the people so his contribution in political or in cultural field would be always important for generations to come.
The last resting place of this great son of Assam & India at the bank of river Brahmaputra, in Kolibari, Tezpur, Assam.
